Tasigna® is the originator brand for nilotinib, developed by Novartis. It is prescribed in the management of Philadelphia-chromosome-positive chronic myeloid leukemia in adults (and in some cases children). It is a prescription-only specialist medicine.
Nilotinib is a tyrosine kinase inhibitor that targets the BCR-ABL protein associated with chronic myeloid leukemia. By blocking this signal it is used as part of a treatment plan directed by your haematologist.
Nilotinib is prescribed for patients with Philadelphia-chromosome-positive CML, as determined by a haematologist based on diagnosis, prior treatment, and overall health.
Nilotinib is usually taken twice daily, about 12 hours apart, on an empty stomach — no food for two hours before and one hour after each dose — swallowed whole. Food significantly increases absorption, so the empty-stomach timing matters. Your haematologist monitors heart rhythm (ECG) and blood tests during treatment.
Never change your dose on your own.
Reported side effects of nilotinib may include changes in heart rhythm (QT prolongation), low blood counts, headache, rash, and raised blood sugar. Because of the heart-rhythm risk, ECG and electrolyte monitoring are used, and the empty-stomach dosing must be followed. This is not a complete list.
