Generic Sustiva (Efavirenz)

Efavirenz is the active ingredient in Sustiva® (Stocrin® in some regions), an NNRTI used with other antiretrovirals to treat HIV-1. Generic efavirenz contains the same active ingredient at the same strengths and is produced by licensed pharmaceutical manufacturers, typically far below the originator price. Sustiva carried the price of being first to market: the company that originally brought it to patients funded the research, clinical trials and global launch, and patent protection kept branded pricing high for years. Once that exclusivity lapsed, licensed manufacturers were able to produce the identical efavirenz molecule — at the same 200 mg and 600 mg strengths and in the same forms — without repeating that early outlay, which is why the generic costs dramatically less. With the generic you get the same active ingredient at the same strength, without the brand premium. Efavirenz is always taken as one component of a combination regimen and remains a prescription-only medicine, so an HIV specialist still decides whether it is appropriate for you.
