Nexavar® is the originator brand for sorafenib, developed by Bayer. It is prescribed in the management of advanced renal cell carcinoma, hepatocellular (liver) carcinoma, and differentiated thyroid carcinoma. It is a prescription-only specialist medicine.
Sorafenib is a multikinase inhibitor. It blocks several signalling proteins involved in tumour growth and blood-vessel formation. It is used as part of a treatment plan directed by your oncologist.
Sorafenib is prescribed for adults with specific advanced kidney, liver, or thyroid cancers, as determined by an oncologist based on your diagnosis and overall health.
Sorafenib is usually taken as 400 mg twice daily, without food (at least one hour before or two hours after eating), swallowed with water. Your oncologist may adjust the dose if side effects occur. Take it consistently in relation to meals.
Never change your dose on your own.
Reported side effects of sorafenib may include hand-foot skin reaction (sore, red palms and soles), rash, diarrhoea, high blood pressure, and tiredness. Your oncologist monitors blood pressure and may adjust treatment. This is not a complete list.
