Abiraterone acetate is the active ingredient in Zytiga®, used with a corticosteroid in the management of metastatic prostate cancer. Zytiga® is the originator brand for abiraterone acetate, developed by Janssen. It is prescribed, together with prednisone or prednisolone, in the management of metastatic castration-resistant and certain high-risk prostate cancers. It is a prescription-only medicine used under specialist supervision.
Abiraterone acetate works by reducing the body's production of androgens (such as testosterone), which can stimulate the growth of prostate-cancer cells. It is always prescribed alongside a corticosteroid, as directed by your oncologist.
Abiraterone is prescribed for adult men with specific stages of prostate cancer, as determined by an oncologist based on diagnosis and overall health. It is taken with a corticosteroid and with attention to how it is taken relative to food.
Abiraterone is typically taken once daily on an empty stomach — no food for at least two hours before and one hour after the dose — and always together with a corticosteroid (prednisone or prednisolone) as directed. Food significantly increases absorption, so consistent empty-stomach dosing matters. Tablets are swallowed whole with water.

Reported side effects of abiraterone may include high blood pressure, fluid retention, low potassium, joint swelling or discomfort, and changes in liver function. Because of these, your doctor monitors blood pressure, potassium, and liver tests during treatment.
