Ruxolitinib is a targeted tablet for a group of blood conditions called myeloproliferative neoplasms — mainly myelofibrosis, where scar tissue builds up in the bone marrow and the spleen enlarges, and polycythaemia vera, where too many red cells are made, when hydroxyurea has not worked or is not tolerated. It is also used for acute and chronic graft-versus-host disease after a stem-cell transplant when steroids have not been enough.
It blocks two enzymes, JAK1 and JAK2, that carry the over-active growth signal in these conditions. For most people the first things to improve are spleen size, night sweats, itching, bone pain and tiredness.
Ruxolitinib is taken twice a day with or without food, and the dose is set — and adjusted — from your platelet count and blood counts. It must not be stopped suddenly. It is a prescription-only medicine; a valid prescription must be provided at checkout.
