What is Emtricitabine?

Emtricitabine (FTC) is a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) used as part of combination antiretroviral therapy (ART) for HIV-1 infection. It works by blocking the reverse transcriptase enzyme that HIV needs to copy its genetic material. It is also active against Hepatitis B virus and is available as a generic and under the brand name Emtriva.

How Does It Work?

Cellular uptake & phosphorylation to active FTC-TP

Emtricitabine enters HIV-infected cells and is phosphorylated intracellularly to its active triphosphate form (FTC-TP), which then competes with the natural substrate.

Chain termination — competes with dCTP

FTC-TP competes with deoxycytidine triphosphate (dCTP) for incorporation into the growing viral DNA chain, causing premature termination of reverse transcription.

Viral suppression — HIV cannot replicate without functional RT

Without a functional reverse transcriptase enzyme, HIV cannot complete replication, and consistent dosing maintains undetectable viral loads in most patients.
