Ritonavir at low doses (100 mg) is used as a pharmacokinetic booster for other HIV protease inhibitors, not as an antiviral in its own right at that dose. It inhibits CYP3A4 in the liver and gut, dramatically increasing blood levels of co-administered PIs.

Original PI activity

At full antiretroviral doses (600 mg twice daily) ritonavir itself inhibits HIV protease, though this is now rarely used due to tolerability concerns.
