Overview

What is Mycophenolate Mofetil?

Mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) is an immunosuppressant that prevents the body from rejecting a transplanted organ. It works by selectively blocking the proliferation of T and B lymphocytes — the main immune cells responsible for organ rejection — while largely sparing other cell types that can use an alternative purine synthesis route.
Mechanism

How Does It Work?

1
Prodrug conversion

MMF is rapidly hydrolysed to the active mycophenolic acid (MPA) after oral administration, which carries out the drug's immunosuppressive action.

2
IMPDH inhibition

MPA selectively inhibits inosine monophosphate dehydrogenase (IMPDH), the rate-limiting enzyme in the de novo purine synthesis pathway required for DNA replication.

3
Lymphocyte selectivity

T and B cells rely almost exclusively on de novo purine synthesis. IMPDH inhibition therefore selectively suppresses lymphocyte proliferation while other cells use the salvage pathway.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I need Mofilet 500 mg Tablets after my transplant?
Your immune system would normally attack a transplanted organ as foreign tissue. Mycophenolate Mofetil selectively suppresses the T and B cells responsible for rejection, allowing your new organ to function safely.
Can I stop taking Mofilet 500 mg Tablets if I feel well?
No. Stopping Mycophenolate Mofetil without medical advice can trigger acute rejection within days, even years after transplant. Always consult your transplant team before any changes.
Is Mofilet 500 mg Tablets safe during pregnancy?
No — Mycophenolate Mofetil is teratogenic and must be avoided in pregnancy. Use two forms of reliable contraception throughout treatment and for 6 weeks after stopping.
What infections should I watch for while taking Mofilet 500 mg Tablets?
Bacterial, viral (CMV, BK virus), and fungal infections are more common. Report any fever, unusual fatigue, or respiratory symptoms to your doctor promptly.
⚠ BLACK BOX WARNING

Increased susceptibility to infection and possible development of lymphoma may result from immunosuppression. Only physicians experienced in immunosuppressive therapy should prescribe.

Use during pregnancy is associated with increased risk of pregnancy loss and congenital malformations. Females of reproductive potential must use effective contraception.

Drug Interactions

Drug / SubstanceEffectAction
Tacrolimus / ciclosporin (pharmacokinetic interaction)
Antacids / cholestyramine (reduce MPA absorption — separate doses)
Live vaccines (avoid during immunosuppression)
