Lenalidomide is the active ingredient in Revlimid®, an immunomodulatory medicine used in multiple myeloma and certain other blood conditions. Generic lenalidomide contains the same active ingredient at the same strengths and is produced by licensed pharmaceutical manufacturers, typically far below the originator price. Revlimid® is the originator brand for lenalidomide, developed by Celgene (Bristol Myers Squibb). It is prescribed in the management of multiple myeloma, certain myelodysplastic syndromes, and some lymphomas. It is a prescription-only specialist medicine subject to strict pregnancy-prevention requirements.
Lenalidomide is an immunomodulatory agent. It acts on the immune system and the environment around certain cancer cells as part of a treatment plan directed by your haematologist or oncologist. It is often combined with other medicines according to your specialist's protocol.
Lenalidomide is prescribed for adults with specific blood cancers and related conditions, as determined by a specialist. Due to a known risk of serious birth defects, it must not be used in pregnancy and is supplied under a controlled pregnancy-prevention programme.
Lenalidomide is usually taken once daily, with water, in treatment cycles set by your specialist (often with rest periods between cycles), commonly alongside other medicines. Reported side effects of lenalidomide may include low blood cell counts (raising infection or bleeding risk), tiredness, diarrhoea or constipation, and an increased risk of blood clots.
