About this medicine

What is Alkixen 250 mg Capsules?

Crizotinib is a targeted capsule for non-small cell lung cancer whose cells carry a rearranged ALK or ROS1 gene. It was the first medicine developed for ALK-positive lung cancer and is still used for ROS1-positive disease, where it remains a standard first choice, and for ALK-positive disease where newer drugs are not available. It is also approved for a rare childhood lymphoma (ALK-positive anaplastic large cell lymphoma) and for inflammatory myofibroblastic tumour.

It blocks the faulty ALK, ROS1 or MET protein that drives the cancer. Your tumour must have been tested for one of these changes before it is prescribed.

Crizotinib is taken twice a day with or without food, continuously. Vision disturbances (trails of light, flashes) are common and usually harmless; liver tests, heart rate and ECG are monitored. It is a prescription-only medicine; a valid prescription must be provided at checkout.

How it works

How does Crizotinib work?

In ALK-positive and ROS1-positive lung cancers a piece of the ALK or ROS1 gene has fused to another gene, creating a permanently active protein that tells the cell to grow. Crizotinib enters the cell and blocks the signalling part of that protein, so the message stops and the cancer cell dies. It also blocks MET, another growth receptor that is over-active in some tumours. Crizotinib does not cross well into the brain, which is one reason newer ALK inhibitors such as alectinib are often preferred for ALK-positive disease; for ROS1-positive disease it remains a standard option.

Kinase blockade

Crizotinib competes with ATP at the ALK, ROS1 and MET kinase domains, preventing autophosphorylation.

Signal cut off

Downstream STAT3, PI3K/AKT and MAPK pathways are silenced in fusion-driven tumour cells.

Cell death

Oncogene-addicted cells arrest and undergo apoptosis; resistance can emerge through ALK kinase-domain mutations or MET amplification.

Dosage

How to take Alkixen 250 mg Capsules

Your oncologist will prescribe your exact dose. The right dose for you depends on your weight, kidney and liver function, and — for some medicines — your genetic test results.

Always take exactly as prescribed. Do not change your dose or stop taking this medicine without speaking to your doctor first, even if you feel well.

Missed a dose? If it is less than 6 hours until the next dose, skip the missed one. If you vomit after a dose, do not replace it. Never double up.

With food? With or without food. Swallow capsules whole with water; do not open, crush or chew. Avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice.

Important safety information

Safety & warnings

Please read this section before taking Alkixen 250 mg Capsules and discuss any concerns with your oncologist.

Common side effects

Side effects affect some people, not everyone. Most are manageable — let your treatment team know about anything that concerns you.

  • Vision disturbances (light trails, flashes, blurring — usually mild and brief)
  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation
  • Swelling of hands, feet or face (oedema)
  • Raised liver enzymes
  • Tiredness (fatigue)
  • Reduced appetite, taste changes
  • Low white blood cells
  • Dizziness, tingling in hands and feet
  • Slow heart rate (bradycardia)
  • Low testosterone in men

Contact your doctor immediately if you notice:

  • Yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, pain under the right ribs, severe tiredness Contact your oncologist immediately — severe liver injury has occurred; liver tests every two weeks for the first two months.
  • New or worsening breathlessness, dry cough, fever Seek urgent review — lung inflammation (pneumonitis) can be severe; crizotinib is stopped permanently if confirmed.
  • Palpitations, dizziness, fainting, very slow pulse Seek urgent care — crizotinib slows the heart and can prolong the QT interval; ECG and electrolytes are monitored.
  • Sudden loss of vision or a marked change in sight Stop and seek urgent eye assessment — severe vision loss is rare but reported. Do not drive if vision is affected.
  • Fever with chills, or signs of infection Contact your team — white cells can fall.
  • Severe abdominal pain, vomiting, black stools Seek emergency care — bowel perforation has been reported rarely.

Important: tell your doctor about these medicines

Taking Crizotinib with certain other medicines can be dangerous. Always tell every doctor, dentist, and pharmacist about all medicines you are taking.

  • Strong CYP3A inhibitors (ketoconazole, itraconazole, clarithromycin, ritonavir) and grapefruit Major

    Increase crizotinib levels several-fold.

  • Strong CYP3A inducers (rifampicin, phenytoin, carbamazepine, St John's wort) Major

Reduce crizotinib levels and may make it less effective.

  • CYP3A substrates with a narrow margin (midazolam, tacrolimus, cyclosporine, some statins) Major

Crizotinib is a moderate CYP3A inhibitor and raises their levels.

  • Medicines that slow the heart or prolong the QT interval (beta-blockers, diltiazem, verapamil, digoxin, some antiarrhythmics, antipsychotics, antibiotics) Major

    Additive bradycardia or QT prolongation.

  • Live vaccines Major

Safety not established during active treatment.

Pregnancy & breastfeeding

Crizotinib can harm an unborn baby. It should not be used in pregnancy, and women who could become pregnant should use effective contraception during treatment and for at least 45 days after the last dose.

Do not breastfeed during treatment or for 45 days after the last dose.

Crizotinib may reduce fertility in men and women. Discuss fertility preservation before starting if relevant.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is Crizotinib the same as Xalkori?

Crizotinib is the active ingredient in Xalkori. A generic Crizotinib medicine contains the same active ingredient at the same strength and is taken the same way — the main difference is cost. Always use it as prescribed by a licensed medical professional.

Why am I seeing trails of light and flashes?

Visual effects — light trails, flashes, brief blurring, especially in dim light or when changing from dark to bright — affect most people on crizotinib, usually in the first weeks, and are generally harmless. They often fade. Do not drive if they trouble you, and report any real loss of vision at once.

Do I need an ALK or ROS1 test before Alkixen 250 mg Capsules?

Yes. Crizotinib is approved only for tumours with an ALK or ROS1 rearrangement, and your oncologist will have confirmed one with a validated test before prescribing. (It also blocks MET in the laboratory, but there is no approved MET use.)

How does Alkixen 250 mg Capsules compare with alectinib?

Both block ALK. Alectinib is more selective, reaches the brain and works against several crizotinib-resistance mutations, so it is usually preferred first-line for ALK-positive disease where available. For ROS1-positive lung cancer, crizotinib remains a standard first choice. Your oncologist decides based on your tumour and what is accessible.

[3] EMA: Xalkori — European public assessment report

Is Alkixen 250 mg Capsules chemotherapy?

No. It is a targeted therapy that blocks one faulty protein. Hair loss is not typical; nausea, swelling, vision effects and tiredness are the usual side effects.

[2] NCI Drug Information: Crizotinib

Why are my liver tests and ECG checked?

Crizotinib commonly raises liver enzymes and occasionally causes serious liver injury, so tests are done every two weeks for the first two months. It also slows the heart and can lengthen the QT interval on the ECG, which matters if you take other medicines with the same effect.

[1] FDA prescribing information: Xalkori (crizotinib) — DailyMed

Is Alkixen 250 mg Capsules the same as Xalkori?

Alkixen 250 mg Capsules contains the same active ingredient, crizotinib, at the same 250 mg strength as the originator brand Xalkori. Generic medicines must meet the same regulatory standards for quality, safety and effectiveness. Used as prescribed by a licensed medical professional.

[3] EMA: Xalkori — European public assessment report

Can I take Alkixen 250 mg Capsules with food?

Yes, with or without food. Avoid grapefruit, which raises crizotinib levels.

Do I need a prescription to order Alkixen 250 mg Capsules?

Yes. Crizotinib is prescription-only. Upload your oncologist's prescription at checkout; our pharmacist team reviews it before dispatch. Used as prescribed by a licensed medical professional.
