What is Basiliximab?
How Does It Work?
Basiliximab binds the CD25 alpha subunit of the high-affinity IL-2 receptor expressed on activated T lymphocytes, blocking IL-2 from docking.
Without IL-2 signalling, antigen-specific T cells cannot undergo the clonal proliferation that drives acute rejection of the transplanted organ.
Therapeutic saturation of CD25 receptors is maintained for 4–6 weeks after two doses, covering the highest-risk period for acute rejection after surgery.
How to Use
- 20 mg IV over 20–30 minutes on day 0 (2 hours before transplant surgery)
- 20 mg IV on day 4 post-transplant (two doses total only)
- Paediatric < 35 kg: 10 mg on day 0 and day 4
