About this medicine

What is Meqsel 0.5 mg Tablet?

Trametinib is a targeted cancer medicine taken as a tablet. It is used for cancers that carry a particular change in the BRAF gene (a 'BRAF V600 mutation') — most often melanoma that has spread or cannot be removed by surgery, and also certain lung, thyroid and other solid tumours. It is almost always given together with dabrafenib, a BRAF inhibitor; the two drugs block consecutive steps of the same growth pathway.

Before starting, your tumour must have been tested and shown to carry the BRAF V600 mutation. Trametinib is not used for tumours without it.

It is taken once a day on an empty stomach. Your oncologist sets the dose and monitors your heart, eyes, skin and blood pressure during treatment. Trametinib is a prescription-only medicine; a valid prescription must be provided at checkout.

How it works

How does Trametinib work?

In BRAF-mutant cancers, a faulty BRAF protein sends a permanent 'grow' signal down a chain of proteins called the MAPK pathway (RAS → RAF → MEK → ERK). Trametinib blocks MEK, the step just below BRAF, so the signal cannot reach the cell's nucleus and the cancer cell stops dividing. Dabrafenib blocks BRAF itself; using both together shuts the pathway at two points, which works better and reduces some of the skin side effects seen when a BRAF inhibitor is used alone.

The faulty signal

A BRAF V600 mutation keeps the RAF protein permanently switched on, driving continuous growth signalling through MEK and ERK.

MEK blockade

Trametinib binds MEK1 and MEK2 and stops them activating ERK, breaking the chain below BRAF.

Growth arrest

Without ERK signalling the cancer cell stops progressing through its division cycle; with dabrafenib blocking BRAF above, the pathway is closed at two points.

BRAF V600E-mutant non-small cell lung cancer (metastatic)

With dabrafenib.

FDA EMA
BRAF V600E-mutant anaplastic thyroid cancer

With dabrafenib, where there is no satisfactory local treatment option.

FDA
BRAF V600E-mutant solid tumours (tumour-agnostic) and low-grade glioma

With dabrafenib, in adults and children aged one and over, after prior treatment. Your oncologist will confirm eligibility.

Dosage

How to take Meqsel 0.5 mg Tablet

Your oncologist will prescribe your exact dose. The right dose for you depends on your weight, kidney and liver function, and — for some medicines — your genetic test results.

Always take exactly as prescribed. Do not change your dose or stop taking this medicine without speaking to your doctor first, even if you feel well.

Missed a dose? If it is less than 12 hours until the next dose, skip the missed one. Never take two doses together.

With food? Take on an empty stomach — at least one hour before or two hours after a meal — with a full glass of water. Swallow whole.

Important safety information

Safety & warnings

Please read this section before taking Meqsel 0.5 mg Tablet and discuss any concerns with your oncologist.

Common side effects

Side effects affect some people, not everyone. Most are manageable — let your treatment team know about anything that concerns you.

  • Fever (pyrexia), often with chills — particularly with dabrafenib
  • Rash, acne-like spots, dry skin
  • Diarrhoea and nausea
  • Tiredness (fatigue)
  • Swelling of hands, feet or face (oedema)
  • Raised blood pressure
  • Headache, joint and muscle pain
  • Raised liver enzymes

Contact your doctor immediately if you notice:

  • Breathlessness, swollen ankles, fast or irregular heartbeat Contact your team urgently — trametinib can weaken the heart's pumping (reduced ejection fraction). Heart scans are done before and during treatment.
  • Blurred vision, seeing halos or spots, eye pain Seek prompt eye assessment — possible retinal fluid (RPED) or retinal vein occlusion.
  • Fever of 38.5°C or higher, rigors, dizziness or dehydration Contact your team the same day; treatment is usually paused and restarted with fever management.
  • New cough, breathlessness or chest pain Seek urgent review — possible lung inflammation (pneumonitis).
  • Unusual bleeding: coughing or vomiting blood, black stools, severe headache Seek emergency care.
  • Severe skin reaction with blistering or peeling Stop and contact your team immediately.
  • New skin growths or changes to moles Report at your next visit; skin checks are routine on this treatment.

Important: tell your doctor about these medicines

Taking Trametinib with certain other medicines can be dangerous. Always tell every doctor, dentist, and pharmacist about all medicines you are taking.

  • Other medicines that lower heart function or prolong QT Major

    Additive cardiac effects.

  • Live vaccines Major

Safety not established during active anticancer treatment.

Pregnancy & breastfeeding

Trametinib can harm an unborn baby. It should not be used in pregnancy, and women who could become pregnant should use effective contraception during treatment and for at least four months after the last dose.

Do not breastfeed during treatment or for four months after the last dose.

Trametinib may reduce fertility in women. Discuss fertility preservation before starting if relevant.

Storage

How to store Meqsel 0.5 mg Tablet

Temperature

Store in a refrigerator at 2–8°C (36–46°F). Do not freeze. Tablets may be kept at room temperature (below 30°C) for up to 30 days once removed.

Light & moisture

Keep in the original bottle with the desiccant, tightly closed, protected from light and moisture.

Keep away from children

Keep out of the sight and reach of children.

Safe handling

Anticancer medicine: swallow whole, do not crush; wash hands after handling. Return unused tablets to a pharmacy.

Travelling

Trametinib needs refrigeration. Use an insulated cool bag for journeys, keep it in the original bottle, and carry your prescription and an oncologist's letter. The 30-day room-temperature allowance covers most trips — note the date you removed it from the fridge.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Why is Meqsel 0.5 mg Tablet given with dabrafenib?

The two drugs block consecutive steps of the same growth pathway — dabrafenib blocks BRAF, trametinib blocks MEK just below it. Used together they work better than either alone and cause fewer of the skin growths that BRAF inhibitors can cause on their own. Trametinib alone is rarely used today.

Do I need a BRAF test before taking Meqsel 0.5 mg Tablet?

Yes. Trametinib only helps tumours that carry a BRAF V600 mutation, and your oncologist will have confirmed this with a validated test on your tumour tissue or blood before prescribing.

Why does Meqsel 0.5 mg Tablet need to be kept in the fridge?

The tablets are stable long-term only between 2 and 8°C. Once out of the fridge they can be kept below 30°C for up to 30 days, which covers travel. Write the date on the bottle when you take it out.

[1] FDA prescribing information: Mekinist (trametinib) — DailyMed

Is fever normal on this treatment?

Fever is the most common side effect of the dabrafenib–trametinib combination, often in the first weeks. Your team will give you a plan — usually pausing both drugs, treating the fever, and restarting once you are well for 24 hours. Do not manage a fever of 38.5°C or more on your own; call your team.

[4] Macmillan Cancer Support: Dabrafenib and trametinib

Why do I need heart scans and eye checks?

Trametinib can reduce the heart's pumping strength in some people and can cause fluid to collect under the retina. An echocardiogram is done before starting and periodically after, and any change in vision should be checked promptly. Both usually recover when the dose is paused.

What if I miss a dose of Meqsel 0.5 mg Tablet?

Take it if there are more than 12 hours until your next dose; otherwise skip it and carry on as normal. Never double up.

Do I need a prescription to order Meqsel 0.5 mg Tablet?

Yes. Trametinib is prescription-only. Upload your oncologist's prescription at checkout; our pharmacist team reviews it before dispatch. Used as prescribed by a licensed medical professional.
