Trametinib is a targeted cancer medicine taken as a tablet. It is used for cancers that carry a particular change in the BRAF gene (a 'BRAF V600 mutation') — most often melanoma that has spread or cannot be removed by surgery, and also certain lung, thyroid and other solid tumours. It is almost always given together with dabrafenib, a BRAF inhibitor; the two drugs block consecutive steps of the same growth pathway.
Before starting, your tumour must have been tested and shown to carry the BRAF V600 mutation. Trametinib is not used for tumours without it.
It is taken once a day on an empty stomach. Your oncologist sets the dose and monitors your heart, eyes, skin and blood pressure during treatment. Trametinib is a prescription-only medicine; a valid prescription must be provided at checkout.
