What is Lamivudine?
How Does It Work?
Lamivudine enters infected cells and is phosphorylated to its active triphosphate form (3TC-TP) by cellular kinases.
3TC-TP competes with the natural substrate cytidine triphosphate, incorporating into viral DNA and causing premature termination of reverse transcription.
In HIV treatment, 3TC also suppresses Hepatitis B viral replication when co-infected, making it useful in HIV/HBV co-infection.
