Lapatinib is a targeted medicine taken as a tablet for breast cancer that is 'HER2-positive' — meaning the cancer cells carry too much of a growth-signal protein called HER2 — and has spread beyond the breast or come back after other treatment. It is given together with capecitabine (a chemotherapy tablet), or with letrozole for women whose cancer is also hormone-receptor-positive and who have been through the menopause, or with trastuzumab.
Unlike trastuzumab, which is an antibody given by infusion and works on the outside of the cell, lapatinib is a small molecule that gets inside the cell and blocks the HER2 signal there. It can therefore still work after trastuzumab has stopped helping.
It is taken once a day on an empty stomach, and your heart, liver and skin are monitored during treatment. Lapatinib is a prescription-only medicine; a valid prescription must be provided at checkout.
