About this medicine

What is Zyceva 150 mg Tablets?

Erlotinib is a targeted tablet for non-small cell lung cancer whose cells carry a change (mutation) in the EGFR gene. It is used as a first treatment for metastatic EGFR-mutant lung cancer, as maintenance after chemotherapy, and — with gemcitabine — for pancreatic cancer that has spread.

It was one of the first EGFR inhibitors and works by sitting in the receptor's signalling pocket and blocking the growth message the mutation has jammed on. Newer drugs such as osimertinib are now often preferred where available, but erlotinib remains widely used and is available as low-cost generics.

Erlotinib is taken once a day on an empty stomach. An acne-like rash and diarrhoea are the expected side effects; smoking lowers its blood levels substantially. It is a prescription-only medicine; a valid prescription must be provided at checkout.

How it works

How does Erlotinib work?

EGFR is a receptor on the surface of lung cells that tells the cell to grow when activated. In some lung cancers a mutation leaves EGFR permanently switched on, and the tumour depends on that signal. Erlotinib enters the cell and occupies the part of EGFR that passes the signal on, so the message stops and the cancer cell dies. The bond is reversible, so steady daily dosing keeps the receptor blocked. Normal skin and gut cells use EGFR for day-to-day repair, so rash and diarrhoea are expected effects rather than allergies — and a rash often signals the drug is reaching its target.

ATP-site competition

Erlotinib reversibly occupies the ATP-binding site of the EGFR kinase domain.

Signal cut off

Autophosphorylation stops, silencing MAPK and PI3K/AKT growth signalling in EGFR-dependent cells.

Cell death and resistance

Mutant EGFR tumour cells arrest and die; resistance most often emerges through the T790M gatekeeper mutation, which third-generation inhibitors target.

Dosage

How to take Zyceva 150 mg Tablets

Your oncologist will prescribe your exact dose. The right dose for you depends on your weight, kidney and liver function, and — for some medicines — your genetic test results.

Always take exactly as prescribed. Do not change your dose or stop taking this medicine without speaking to your doctor first, even if you feel well.

Missed a dose? Skip a missed dose and take the next one at the usual time. Do not double up.

With food? Take on an empty stomach — at least one hour before or two hours after food. Food roughly doubles absorption. Swallow whole with water. Avoid grapefruit.

Important safety information

Safety & warnings

Please read this section before taking Zyceva 150 mg Tablets and discuss any concerns with your oncologist.

Common side effects

Side effects affect some people, not everyone. Most are manageable — let your treatment team know about anything that concerns you.

  • Acne-like rash, dry skin, itching
  • Diarrhoea
  • Reduced appetite, weight loss
  • Tiredness (fatigue)
  • Cough, breathlessness (disease-related in many cases)
  • Nausea, vomiting, mouth soreness
  • Conjunctivitis, dry eyes, ingrown eyelashes
  • Nail-fold inflammation (paronychia)
  • Raised liver enzymes
  • Hair thinning or changes in hair texture

Contact your doctor immediately if you notice:

  • New or worsening breathlessness, cough or fever Seek urgent review — interstitial lung disease is rare but can be fatal; erlotinib is stopped if confirmed.
  • Diarrhoea that is severe, persistent, or comes with dehydration Contact your team the same day; loperamide is usually prescribed to start at the first loose stool.
  • Yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, severe tiredness Contact your doctor immediately — liver failure has been reported, especially with existing liver disease.
  • Severe abdominal pain, vomiting, black stools Seek emergency care — bowel perforation and gastrointestinal bleeding have occurred, more often with NSAIDs or anticoagulants.
  • Painful blistering rash, or rash with fever and mouth ulcers Stop and seek urgent care — severe skin reactions are rare but reported.
  • Eye pain, sudden vision change, severe redness Seek prompt eye assessment — corneal problems can occur; do not wear contact lenses if eyes are sore.
  • Passing much less urine, swelling, confusion Seek review — kidney injury has occurred, usually from dehydration after diarrhoea.

Important: tell your doctor about these medicines

Taking Erlotinib with certain other medicines can be dangerous. Always tell every doctor, dentist, and pharmacist about all medicines you are taking.

  • Cigarette smoking Major

Induces CYP1A2 and lowers erlotinib levels by roughly half.

  • Strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (ketoconazole, itraconazole, clarithromycin, ritonavir) and grapefruit Major

    Increase erlotinib levels.

  • Strong CYP3A4 inducers (rifampicin, phenytoin, carbamazepine, St John's wort) Major

    Reduce erlotinib levels substantially.

  • Proton-pump inhibitors (omeprazole, esomeprazole) and H2 blockers (ranitidine, famotidine) Major

Raised stomach pH cuts erlotinib absorption by up to half.

  • Warfarin and other anticoagulants Major

Raised INR and bleeding, including gastrointestinal bleeding.

Pregnancy & breastfeeding

Erlotinib can harm an unborn baby. It should not be used in pregnancy, and women who could become pregnant should use effective contraception during treatment and for at least one month after the last dose.

Do not breastfeed during treatment or for two weeks after the last dose.

Effects on human fertility are not established. Discuss fertility preservation before starting if relevant.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is Erlotinib the same as Tarceva?

Erlotinib is the active ingredient in Tarceva. A generic Erlotinib medicine contains the same active ingredient at the same strength and is taken the same way — the main difference is cost. Always use it as prescribed by a licensed medical professional.

Do I need an EGFR test before taking Zyceva 150 mg Tablets?

Yes, for lung cancer. Erlotinib only helps tumours with an activating EGFR mutation; your oncologist will have confirmed one on a tumour sample or blood test before prescribing. (For pancreatic cancer no mutation test is needed.)

How does Zyceva 150 mg Tablets differ from gefitinib, afatinib or osimertinib?

All target EGFR. Erlotinib and gefitinib are first-generation, reversible inhibitors; afatinib binds permanently and also blocks HER2/HER4; osimertinib is third-generation, covers the T790M resistance mutation and reaches the brain. Where osimertinib is available it is often chosen first; erlotinib remains an effective, lower-cost option. Your oncologist decides based on your mutation and access.

[2] NCI Drug Information: Erlotinib Hydrochloride

Does smoking matter?

Very much. Smoking speeds up the liver enzyme that clears erlotinib and can halve its blood level, making it less effective. Tell your oncologist if you smoke; the dose may be adjusted, and stopping smoking is strongly advised.

Can I take omeprazole for my stomach?

Ideally not. Erlotinib needs stomach acid to dissolve; acid-reducing medicines cut absorption substantially. If you need one, ask your pharmacist about an H2 blocker timed well away from your dose, or a short-acting antacid several hours apart.

Is the rash a sign it is working?

A rash shows the drug is reaching EGFR in normal skin, and in studies people with more rash tended to do better — but its absence does not mean failure. Treat it with moisturiser, sun protection and the antibiotic cream or tablets your team prescribes; tell them if it blisters or becomes painful.

[4] Macmillan Cancer Support: Erlotinib (Tarceva)

Is Zyceva 150 mg Tablets the same as Tarceva?

Zyceva 150 mg Tablets contains the same active ingredient, erlotinib, at the same 150 mg strength as the originator brand Tarceva. Generic medicines must meet the same regulatory standards for quality, safety and effectiveness. Used as prescribed by a licensed medical professional.

[3] EMA: Tarceva — European public assessment report

Why on an empty stomach?

Food roughly doubles absorption, which would make blood levels and side effects unpredictable. Take it at least an hour before or two hours after eating, with water.

Do I need a prescription to order Zyceva 150 mg Tablets?

Yes. Erlotinib is prescription-only. Upload your oncologist's prescription at checkout; our pharmacist team reviews it before dispatch. Used as prescribed by a licensed medical professional.
